How it works

Critical Illness Cover is usually an add-on to any sort of life insurance, mortgage protection or family protection insurance and pays you a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed as having one of the critical illnesses defined in your plan. The cover can help with the costs of care, ongoing medical bills, or unexpected expenses associated with your diagnosis such as travelling abroad for treatment – or even a convalescent holiday to help you recover! It can also cover your financial commitments if you have to stop working due to a major health crisis.

You mustn’t confuse Critical Illness Cover and Terminal Illness Cover, the latter will pay out if you are diagnosed with one of the stated illnesses and are predicted to die within 12 months.

Be aware that your gender, marital status, family history and whether or not you have children can all affect whether or not a policy is right for you.
